What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is dizziness or the feeling of everything spinning around you, when though you are perfectly still. Many people relate the term Vertigo with the fear of heights, which is not correct. You may experience Vertigo when looking down from great heights, but that is not the same as Acrophobia. Vertigo is just a temporary spell of dizziness as a result of an underlying problem.

Symptoms of Vertigo

People with Vertigo may feel their head is spinning, they are Tilting or Swaying in one direction while being still.

Other than a dizzy feeling, other symptoms that may accompany Vertigo are:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abnormal or jerking eye movements
  • Headache
  • Stumbling while walking
  • Lightheadedness
  • Fainting or near fainting
  • Balance problems
  • Sweating
  • Blurry vision or difficulty focusing
  • Problems hearing, especially in one ear, Ringing ears
  • Feeling fatigued or tired all the time
  • Double vision

What are the common causes of vertigo?

Vertigo is a temporary symptom and usually associated with problems in the inner ear or brain. But there can be various reasons which cause Vertigo.

Here are some common causes responsible for Vertigo:

  •  Spinning in circles
  • Standing up too quickly

These are generally a result of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It causes short and temporary episodes of mild to intense dizziness usually triggered by changes in the positioning of your head. This might happen on tipping your head up or down, lying down, or turning over in bed. It is generally not serious.

  • Intoxication
  • Side effects of medication
  • Meniere’s disease, which is a disorder of the inner ear. It is caused due to a buildup of fluid and a change in the ear pressure
  • Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis which is an inner ear problem usually related to infection (viral)
  • Migraine headaches
  • Head injury
  • Ear surgery, etc

Vertigo Treatment in Portland, OR

The treatment for vertigo is based on its cause, underlying issue and severity. Generally, vertigo resolves on its own without any treatment as the brain adapts to the inner ear changes using other mechanisms to maintain balance. However, one may need treatment if there is an underlying problem.

Medications: Medications are available to relieve the symptoms. Antihistamines and anti-emetics are given to reduce motion sickness and nausea. Antihistamines are available over the counter.

Surgery: Surgery may be needed if other non-surgical treatments are not effective in resolving the symptoms. BPPV and acoustic neuroma are two conditions for which surgery may be necessary.

Specific Treatment:

  • Acute vertigo attack: Bed rest is advised. Antiemetic medications may be prescribed by the physician
  • BPPV: Iintervention like Epley repositioning maneuver may be needed. In this procedure, a specific movement is performed which loosens the calcium crystals and clears them from the ear canal
  • Acute peripheral vestibulopathy: Bed rest and VBAs are advisable

Meniere’s disease: Bed rest along with antiemetic medications are generally recommended. Sometimes your physician may recommend some diuretic medications, and VBAs.
